The Top 5 Drum Sets For Kids Reviewed

child drum set reviewsDrums are a fundamental piece element of modern music. It’s hard to imagine an artist today producing a popular piece of music that doesn’t include percussion to some degree. There are exceptions, but they’re rare.

The drums might not be the most celebrated of instruments, but they’re no less enjoyable to play. Great rhythm forms the backbone of practically any piece of music from the modern era you can imagine.

Choosing the best drum set for your child, however, is a challenge. If you’ve never bought a drum kit before, it’s hard to know how to make your decision. You don’t want to shell out the big bucks for a professional, high-end model if you’re not sure that the drums are for you. But at the same time, you don’t want to sell yourself short, buying something of inferior quality that won’t produce the sound you want. The challenge is even more difficult if you’re buying for a child. You don’t want to drop thousands of dollars on a kit if you’re not sure whether your kid will want to take it up long term. But you don’t want to spend so little that you end up buying something that will hold them back.

In this review, we’re going to take a look at some of the most promising kid drum sets on the market today. We’ll highlight the positives of each and who they’re targeting. Let’s take a look.

Best Drum Sets For Kids

1. Mendini by Cecilio 13 inch 3-Piece Kids/Junior Drum Set

Mendini by Cecilio 13 inch 3-Piece Kids/Junior Drum Set review

The Mendini by Cecilio 13 inch 3-Piece Kids/Junior Drum Set

Medini by Cecilio’s 13-inch Kids/Junior drum is, by all measures, a drum kit marketed exclusively at children. It comes with a bass pedal, a snare, a bass drum, and a single tom. It is just about as compact as you can get while remaining passable. There is no hi-hat, no floor um, no additional toms, and now cowbell.

With that said, the drum kit is a surprisingly self-contained unit. It comes with a handy stool that you can adjust to the correct height and a set of drum sticks, meaning that you don’t have to go out and buy a pair separately.

There are issues with the Cecilio. The first is a minor gripe – the lack of setup instructions. The drum kit doesn’t arrive out of the box fully assembled. Like most bulky products sent in the post today, you have to perform the final part of the assembly process. With instructions, that would be fine, but Cecilio appears to have overlooked this critical detail. Customers have to work it out for themselves.

The second issue is slightly more concerning: pedal squeak. It’s not a big issue if you regularly oil the brake pedal, but it can be annoying when you’re trying to create a rhythm and notice a scraping sound every time you depress the bass pedal. Cecilio says that it’s working on a better mechanism which will arrive on the market soon, but it’s worth exercising caution if you’re planning on going ahead and buying now.

The good thing about this drum set is simplicity. It doesn’t overwhelm you in any way. It’s the perfect setup for your child’s as they build their skills. They’ll be able to recreate the vast majority of beats they hear, even if they can’t do them all. It’s not, however, a long-term solution: the hi-hat and floor drum are non-negotiable elements of any drum kit.

2. Gammon 5-Piece Junior Starter Drum Kit

Gammon 5-Piece Junior Starter Drum Kit review

The Gammon 5-Piece Junior Starter Drum Kit

Gammon’s 5-piece junior starter drum kit is a step up from the Cecilio. It includes a more extensive range of percussion elements than the 3-piece discussed above, including essential elements like the hi-hat and floor drum. It’s the type of drum kit you can keep past the first year, making it ideal for a child wanting to take up the drums long term.

The next question is, will it last? The answer is, probably. Yes, it’s an entry-level product, but that doesn’t appear to have affected Gammon’s choice of materials. The company uses top-notch artificial skins and heavily treated wood to make something that looks like it will survive the test of time, especially if you don’t move it regularly.

Gammon has been able to keep the cost down while providing quality materials by shrinking the drum kit down in size. It’s small enough to be suitable for toddlers aged two and up, making this one of the most versatile junior drum kits on the market today. What’s more, the full functionality allows your child to develop at their own pace, exploring different elements of the drum kit in their own time. This kit doesn’t attempt to hold back the progress of your child in any way.

Despite its small size, the kit has longevity. You’re free to upgrade the cymbals once your child’s level of skill warrants it, to create a better sound. And you can add additional pieces to the set if you require, which you probably won’t.

This drum kit, therefore, is for young beginners from the age of two and up. The striking electric blue coloring makes it attractive, and the five pieces provide the full drumming experience.

3. GP Percussion GP50BL

GP Percussion GP50BL review

The GP Percussion GP50BL

GP Percussion is going after the same market as the Gammon Junior Drum Set with their GP50BL. The three-piece set is just about large enough for an average height seven-year-old child, but any taller and the kit may struggle to accommodate them.

The GP Percussion GP50BL is a three-piece kit like the Cecilio, but it provides more functionality than you’d initially expect. The three pieces are separated across a free-standing hi-hat, a freestanding snare, and a bass drum unit with cymbal and tom attached. This approach provides you with plenty of functionality while at the same time, making setup easy. It’s an intelligent approach that makes installation far more straightforward than it would otherwise be.

The GP50BL is not a professional-quality instrument – let’s be frank. This set is for aspiring young drummers just getting into percussion. With that said, it does provide an acceptable sound quality that’s good enough to make playing it an enjoyable experience. The most likely scenario is that you’ll use the set for a year or so, and then if your child decides to take further lessons, you’ll upgrade to something better.

4. Music Alley Kids 3 Piece Beginners Drum Kit

Music Alley Kids 3 Piece Beginners Drum Kit review

The Music Alley Kids 3 Piece Beginners Drum Kit

Let’s start with some of the positives of Music Alley’s Kids 3-piece. The good news is that the drum kit will satisfy your budget. It’s a small outlay to give your child the chance to develop a musical skill. The equipment is also easy to put together and comes with proper instructions out of the box.

The downside is that the Music Alley doesn’t provide kids with full drum kit functionality. You don’t get a hi-hat or a snare, with two toms acting as somewhat inferior substitutes. What Music Alley should have done is to replace one of the toms with a snare and added a hi-hat so that kids can develop independent rhythm in both their feet. Currently, you’ll have to upgrade the drum kit if your child progresses in their drumming beyond about grade one or two.

It’s hard, therefore, to recommend the Music Alley. While it’s true that it looks cute, it doesn’t provide young people with the opportunity to develop fully-fledged skills on the drums. It’s too limited compared to other options available on the market.

5. Ashthorpe 5-Piece Complete Kid’s Junior Drum Set

Ashthorpe 5-Piece Complete Kid's Junior Drum Set review

The Ashthorpe 5-Piece Complete Kid’s Junior Drum Set

Ashthorpe saw that there was a need in the market for a premium kids drum set. The current offerings, in its opinion, didn’t successfully emulate professional adult drum sets, forcing kids to make an awkward transition when they grew up. The company, therefore, set about creating a set that would offer all features of a full-size kit but without the cost.

The result is the company’s 5-piece Complete Kid’s Junior Drum Set. It is still surprisingly small but comes packed with a host of features that will help your kid take their skills to the next level.

The Ashthorpe is also kind to your pocketbook too. A lot of kids drum kits on the market today target a narrow age range – say three to seven. But Ashthorpe, in its wisdom, saw that this isn’t what parents wanted. It’s much more efficient to buy a drum kit that will serve your child well until they’re old enough to graduate onto an adult drum set. The Kid’s Junior Drum Set was designed, therefore, to be played by children aged three to eleven.

The quality of the drum kit is high. You get triple-flanged hoops, a glossy exterior finish, and genuine hardwood popular shells. The material choice is a significant upgrade from traditional child drum sets that use plastic. The overall effect is a higher quality sound output and a longer life than many competing products on the market.

So who is this product for? Primarily, it’s for parents who plan on having their child play the drums over the long term. The build quality is high, and the set comes with all of the essential features a young drummer needs to develop their skills.
