A Kangaroo, Miranda Lambert & Texas: The Crazy Story Behind Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas”
Ella Langley’s smash hit “Choosin’ Texas” may sound like a classic country heartbreak song, but its inspiration came from one of the most unexpected songwriting stories you’ll hear.
At its heart, “Choosin’ Texas” is about a woman realizing she simply can’t compete with the pull Texas has on the man she loves. But the idea for the song didn’t begin with heartbreak—it began with a wild story involving country superstar Miranda Lambert, a traffic stop and a pet kangaroo.
During a songwriting retreat, Langley was working alongside Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor when Lambert shared one of her unforgettable stories. Lambert had once been pulled over while traveling with a kangaroo in her vehicle—and, naturally, she was driving a car with Texas plates.
That bizarre story sparked a simple observation from Langley: “She’s from Texas, I can tell.”
And just like that, the song was born.
Langley has explained that the group immediately recognized the potential in the line. What started as a funny comment about Lambert’s Texas roots quickly transformed into the central hook for a song about a woman watching her man fall for someone whose Texas identity runs deeper than she can compete with.
The songwriting team reportedly moved incredibly fast once they found the idea, turning that unexpected moment into the song’s story in roughly 30 minutes.
From a Kangaroo Story to a Country Smash
There’s something wonderfully country about the way “Choosin’ Texas” came together. A strange, hilarious story gets tossed around in a writing room, one line sticks, and suddenly four songwriters have the beginning of something special.
The finished song turns Texas itself into the competition. Instead of another woman simply stealing the narrator’s man, it’s the entire Lone Star State that seems to have his heart.
The song was written by Langley, Lambert, Dick and Taylor, with Lambert also contributing background vocals.
That collaboration makes the song even more fitting. Langley grew up in Alabama, while Lambert is one of the most recognizable Texas-born voices in modern country music. Their connection helped give “Choosin’ Texas” both its humor and its unmistakable country authenticity.
And while fans have spent plenty of time speculating about whether the song was inspired by Langley’s own romantic life, the singer has made it clear that the real origin story is much more unexpected.
A kangaroo.
Sometimes the Best Country Songs Start With the Craziest Stories
“Choosin’ Texas” is proof that songwriting inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere. A random story told between friends became a memorable hook, and that hook eventually became one of the biggest songs in country music.
What makes the story even better is how perfectly the unusual beginning fits the song’s personality. “Choosin’ Texas” has a playful edge, but underneath it is a very relatable story of realizing that someone’s heart belongs somewhere else.
And apparently, sometimes that “somewhere else” is Texas.

One thing is certain: you probably won’t hear “Choosin’ Texas” the same way again after learning that a kangaroo helped inspire it.
