Hayden Panettiere Remembered for Her Music, Her “Nashville” Legacy and a Talent That Shone Brightly
Hayden Panettiere, the actress and singer who brought the complicated country star Juliette Barnes to life on Nashville, has died at 36. For country music fans, her legacy extends far beyond television: she was a genuine vocalist whose performances helped make the fictional world of Nashville feel remarkably real.
Hayden Panettiere’s death marks a heartbreaking loss for fans of television, film and country music.
Panettiere died Sunday, August 16, at age 36, her family confirmed through her representative. She was found unresponsive at a residence in South Carolina, and emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures before she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have said there were no signs of foul play, while the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
But for country music fans, remembering Panettiere means remembering Juliette Barnes.
From 2012 through 2018, Panettiere starred on ABC’s Nashville, later moving with the series to CMT, playing a young, ambitious country-pop star whose career, relationships and personal struggles became central to the show’s story. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
And she didn’t simply play a country singer.
She actually sang.
Hayden Panettiere Was the Voice Behind Juliette Barnes
When Nashville premiered, viewers were introduced to Juliette Barnes as a brash young star determined to prove that she belonged at the top of the country-music world.
The role could have been difficult to pull off.
Instead, Panettiere made Juliette believable not only through her acting, but through her voice.
She performed her own songs for the series, recording extensively for the show’s soundtrack releases. According to the Associated Press, 11 songs recorded by Panettiere for Nashville appeared on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart during the show’s run, including two collaborations with co-star Connie Britton.
That is an impressive musical legacy for an actress who wasn’t originally known as a country singer.
The first Nashville soundtrack was a major success as well. The Music of Nashville: Season 1, Volume 1 debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart.
Songs such as “Love Like Mine,” “Undermine,” “Telescope,” “Yellin’ From the Rooftop” and “Wrong Song” helped establish Juliette Barnes as a convincing recording artist rather than simply a fictional character who happened to sing.
Music Wasn’t New to Panettiere
Although Nashville introduced her musical talent to a much larger country audience, Panettiere had been singing professionally long before she became Juliette Barnes.
She recorded music for several film and television projects, including “I Fly” for Ice Princess, and released the single “Wake Up Call” in 2008.
Her earliest musical recognition came in an unexpected way. Panettiere was a Grammy nominee for a children’s spoken-word album associated with A Bug’s Life.
By the time Nashville came along, she had already spent years experimenting with music.
But country was different.
In an earlier interview, Panettiere explained that after spending years recording music, she had stepped away from it because she didn’t feel it was right for her. She said that if she ever returned to music, she wanted it to be country — making the opportunity to combine acting and country music on Nashville especially meaningful.
And country music gave her a chance to show another side of her talent.
Juliette Barnes Became One of Television’s Most Memorable Country Characters
Part of what made Nashville work was its commitment to treating the music seriously.
Juliette wasn’t simply a fictional pop star inserted into a television drama. Her music was woven into the story.
She had hits. She recorded albums. She performed onstage. She competed with Connie Britton’s Rayna Jaymes. And she struggled with the pressures that come with fame.
Panettiere brought all of those pieces together.
Her character was often difficult, vulnerable and unpredictable — but when Juliette stepped onto a stage, Panettiere had the vocal ability to make audiences believe they were watching a legitimate country performer.
That authenticity helped the show’s music become a major part of its success.
The soundtrack albums repeatedly performed well on the country charts, with The Music of Nashville: Season 2, Volume 1, for example, reaching No. 7 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.
A Career That Refused to Fit Into One Box
Panettiere’s career was remarkably diverse.
She became a household name as Claire Bennet on Heroes, starred in films including Remember the Titans, and later appeared as Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise. But Nashville gave her the opportunity to combine two of her greatest creative strengths: acting and music.
For country fans, that period remains particularly special.
There have been plenty of actors who have portrayed musicians on television.
Far fewer have been able to make audiences believe the music.
Panettiere could.
Remembering Hayden Panettiere
Panettiere’s life was marked by tremendous professional success as well as deeply personal struggles, many of which she discussed publicly in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released earlier this year.
Her family remembered her as an “incredible light” and “a force of nature” who brought love and joy to those around her and to millions of people who watched her on screen.
For the country music community, another part of that legacy deserves to be remembered.
Hayden Panettiere didn’t just portray a country singer.
She gave Juliette Barnes a voice — literally.
And through those performances, she left behind a collection of songs that still stand as a reminder of just how much musical talent she possessed.
At only 36, her story ended far too soon.
But every time a Nashville episode plays, every time “Undermine” or “Telescope” comes through the speakers, fans have another way to remember the woman behind Juliette Barnes.
Hayden Panettiere may have played a country star on television. But the music was real — and so was her talent.
