Matthew McConaughey Gives Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” a Bluegrass Makeover on The Tonight Show

Matthew McConaughey may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but on Wednesday night, he looked right at home picking a mandolin and singing one of country music’s biggest hits.

Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” has already become one of the biggest country songs in recent memory. Now it has received perhaps its most unexpected cover yet — courtesy of Texas native Matthew McConaughey.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, McConaughey teamed up with Fallon and indie folk band The Last Bison for a spirited, bluegrass-inspired rendition of Langley’s chart-topping hit.

And yes, McConaughey played the mandolin.

It All Started With a Fan Suggestion

The performance came as part of The Tonight Show’s Audience Suggestion Box, where viewers submit ideas for the show.

One suggestion proved almost too perfect to ignore: combine Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” with McConaughey’s new movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, in which the actor plays a musician in a bluegrass band.

Fallon read the suggestion on air — and then made it happen.

McConaughey, Fallon and The Last Bison transformed Langley’s modern country hit into a rootsy bluegrass number that sounded as though it could have been pulled straight out of an old-school country variety show.

Fallon even got in on the musical action, playing the washboard as McConaughey handled the mandolin.

The performance was staged with wooden paneling, a full roots band and a vintage-inspired atmosphere that gave the song an entirely different personality.

A Perfect Song for McConaughey

There may not be a more fitting Hollywood celebrity to tackle “Choosin’ Texas.”

McConaughey is famously proud of his Texas roots, and the song’s Lone Star State identity makes the choice feel almost inevitable.

But the timing is particularly appropriate.

McConaughey’s new film, The Rivals of Amziah King, gives him an opportunity to showcase his musical side, making the bluegrass arrangement of Langley’s hit more than just a celebrity novelty. The actor has been leaning into that musical world as part of the film’s promotion.

And judging by the performance, McConaughey wasn’t simply going through the motions.

He looked like he was having a blast.

The cover comes at an extraordinary moment for Langley’s song.

“Choosin’ Texas” has spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, putting it among the longest-running No. 1 songs in chart history.

That success has turned the song into something much larger than a country-radio hit.

It’s become a cultural phenomenon.

And McConaughey’s performance is another sign of just how far the song has traveled beyond the traditional country audience.

There’s something fitting about one of the biggest songs in modern country music being performed in a style that pays tribute to country and bluegrass traditions.

From Chart Hit to Late-Night Bluegrass

“Choosin’ Texas” already has a memorable identity.

But McConaughey and The Last Bison managed to find another side of the song.

For one night, at least, Hollywood’s favorite Texan looked right at home in country music.

And Ella Langley?

She just got one of the most unexpected covers of her biggest song yet.

Not bad for a song about choosing Texas.
